FANDOM

There are many templates in use on the Filly Wiki; these are only a subset, representing some of the most important and commonly used ones. If you feel that a template belongs on this page, do not hesitate to add it.

  • Category:Templates should cover all templates in the wiki, categorized into the various subcategories.
  • The Template namespace (found from Special:Allpages) always has all templates in the wiki, sorted alphanumerically.

What are templates?Edit

Wiki templates provide a means to insert the same content over and over in different (or the same) pages. This saves editors the hassle of duplicating the same text again and again, and also helps ensure consistency.

Templates are generally shown with the format required to use the template (e.g. {{stub}}). Clicking the template name takes you to the template's page, where you can see what it looks like and how it is used.

For more information on templates, see Help:Templates.

Filly Wiki-specific templatesEdit

Character info bracketEdit

{{Character}}

Format, though in a single line: {{Character |name = |image = |species = |gender = |home = |altnames = |firstappearance = }}

Remember to press Enter (or Return, perhaps) between the = and the |, to move the sections into separate lines.

  • There are additional optional sections for particular uses, such as "title" for characters with royal designations, and "spouse", "children", "parents", "grandparents" and "otherrelatives" for characters with a known heritage.
  • You can omit lines from the required format. Though the line will appear in the bracket, it will read as "unknown".
  • To add an image into a character bracket, it is only necessary to write "Lang-AU.png" to get, say, the Australian flag as the lead picture. Not removing link brackets, the "File:" notion, or any parts about size, thumbnailing or picture position will prevent the picture from appearing.
  • To add several names in the same section, like listing two parents with one in each line, remember to add a "<br>" to separate the two of them. Using Enter to make a new line will not work.
  • These hints will for the most part also apply to the other Filly Wiki-specific brackets below.

Major location info bracketEdit

{{Region}}

Format, though in a single line: {{Region |placename = |image = |subregions = |nativefilly = }}

Very much the same notes are applied here as to the Character bracket, though there's no additional sections in current use.

Toy line info bracketEdit

{{ToyLine}}

{{ToyLine |date = |title = |image = |numbertoys = |fillytype = |other merch = |precededby = |followedby = }}

Smaller location info bracketEdit

{{Subregion}}

{{Subregion |placename = |image = |region = |nativefilly = |residents = }}

Navbox GardenerEdit

{{Navbox Gardener}}

This navbox is able to hold multiple bodies within one navbox template, which expands furthermore on the Extended Navbox which was considered not useful on the Filly Wiki. The name "Navbox Gardener" is to somewhat credit WikiGardener, the wiki that coded this navbox and popularized it through Community Wikia discussion threads.

A handful of changes have been done by us to the original code. The Target tab has been removed and replaced with the text "Group names", since it was linked up to another layer of templates, and the body's background color is changed from a light grey to a full-on white. Hopefully, the borrowing, crediting and editing notes comply with the Share Alike distribution license for Wikia.

{{Navbox Gardener |state = |colour = |rowcolour = |header = |group1 = |list1 = |group2 = |list2 = }}

  • State is meant to be a function for whether the box shall be collapsed or uncollapsed upon loading a page with it. At the time of writing, setting it to Collapsed doesn't seem to work as it should.
  • Colour and Rowcolour, with those British spellings, works best with six-digit hexcodes (For example, #1D3DAF). It can also work if you write the name of the colour you want (For instance, Cyan), but the list of colours whose names are accepted is surprisingly small and may lead to annoyances.
  • Header is the name of the navbox, the name that is displayed on top.
  • Group# is the name of the row, and List# is that row's content. Pretty much equivalent to Header and Body in Template:Navbox and Template:Navbox Extended.
  • The width of the group names is pretty small, so exercise brevity in the Group# titles.
  • You can make up to 9 groups with lists, if the writer of this edit understand the coding system right.

Also often in use on Filly WikiEdit

NavboxEdit

{{navbox}}

{{Navbox |header = |body = }}

  • A single-group navbox. All headers are in a dark blue color. A very easy template to try out categorizing with.

Disambiguation articles Edit

{{disambig}}

  • If you have several articles that have similar or identical names, you may wish to create a "disambiguation" page at the main article name, with the articles taking an extra phrase in brackets afterwards. For example:
The Prince <-- disambiguation page, with links to:
The Prince (frog)
The Prince (human)

ForEdit

{{for|<name>|<link>}}

  • Use at the top of articles as a simple "for x see y" template.

Used on occasions on Filly WikiEdit

Nominate an article for deletion Edit

{{delete}}

{{speedydelete|<reason>}}

StubsEdit

{{stub}}

  • When a page has little or no useful information, then it is likely a stub. This template will include them in Category:Article stubs, and is used to list which articles need expanding.
  • For more information, see Help:Stubs.

Main article Edit

{{main|<main article>}}

  • Use at the start of a section to link to the main article on it. A section of a widely covering that summarizes, for example Filly Unicorn, can get a Main template to link to the more specific Filly Unicorn page.

T is for templateEdit

{{t|<template>}}

  • This template allows you to show example template code (with a link to the templates) without using the template itself. It is used extensively on this page, and for the most part only on this page.

Template category templateEdit

{{templatecategory}}

  • This should be added to any template-related categories, to list template-specific categorising details, which differ from those of normal pages.

Rarely used on Filly Wiki, but kept in backhandEdit

Navbox ExtendedEdit

{{Navbox Extended}}

{{Navbox Extended |header = |bcolor = |tcolor = |width = |body = }}

  • A single-group navbox. The color of both the header and the text can be customized.
  • Six-digit hexcodes works best for customizing the colors. Words of certain basic colors can be written as well.
  • The width of the navbox can be changed as well. Setting it to 100% stretches it out to the same width as Navbox and Navbox Gardener, while reducing the percentage will shrink the navbox towards the left.
  • It is possible to stack two Navbox Extendeds alongside each other, by for example setting one's width to 50% and the other one's width to 40%.

Default infobox for episodesEdit

{{Infobox episode}}

{{Infobox episode |title = |season = |number = |image = |imagecaption = |imagewidth = |airdate = |previous = |next = }}

  • Number is which episode it is of the season.
  • Imagewidth is actually changeable on this template. Like with image thumbs in page edits, you can change one of the pixel rates of the image, apparently its width. Anywhere in the range between 200 and 260 sounds uncomplainable.
  • Previous and Next are the names of the previous and last episodes compared to this episode.
  • There are technically two more and pretty prominent tabs, but it would serve no good use to put pressure on Filly Funtasia's writers and directors, whoever they could possibly be, and especially not with quite a distance left to the premiere of it.

WikipediaEdit

{{wikipedia}}, {{wikipedia-deleted}}

  • Wikipedia-related templates. Use {{wikipedia}} for articles taken directly from Wikipedia, and {{wikipedia-deleted}} for articles deleted from Wikipedia. Using either of the two will display a small licencing note in the article and a link to a Wikipedia article author list.

SandboxEdit

{{sandbox}}

  • A template that should be used to head up all Project:Sandbox pages. There are no currently known sandbox pages on the Filly Wiki, and only a few cases of it has existed, mostly for testing coded-from-scratch infoboxes.

Category templateEdit

{{category}}

  • This can be added to categories to add general categorising details. Use in cases where it may be useful to point out to users how to categorise, such as popular categories.

WelcomeEdit

{{welcIP}} and {{welcome}}

  • The first (with longer version "welcomeIP" for those of you who like typing more) is to welcome new non-vandalistic contributors who are "anonymous", identified only by their IP number; it encourages them to register.
  • The second template is for welcoming new registered users. Should be customized for the wiki, indicating the pages we most want newcomers to visit.
  • The above two templates are very suitable for having "subst:" prefixed, because they can be edited with additions or deletions appropriate to the apparent strengths of the person being welcomed; e.g. if the contributor has already demonstrated good wiki editing skills you could delete references to pages about "how to edit".
  • An automated welcoming message has long been in use on the Filly Wiki, so manually adding the template could prove superfluous.

Where you may find more templatesEdit

  • Wikia Templates
  • Wikipedia; may be copied with the proper acknowledgment, but some need tweaking to work properly on Wikia, so use a Wikia one if possible.
